THE future of a town carnival has been thrown into doubt after its organiser stepped down.

Fears are also growing over finding a suitable venue for Mold Carnival, which provides a huge boost to local traders and charities, after last year’s event was flooded.

An appeal has now been made for someone to step in and save the two-day event, due to be held during the last week of July.

Town mayor Tony Cattermoul said: “The carnival is very important. It is a huge boost to local businesses and brings a lot of people to the town.

“I would be very sorry to see it discontinued. It takes a large amount of organisation.
It was a shame that last year’s event was not so much rained off as swamped off.”

Mold Carnival has traditionally been held on the town’s recreation ground.

Under the leadership of Cllr Tim Maunders, it has grown from 300 visitors to more than 4,000.

Speaking about his decision to stand down from the volunteer role, he said: “I think it is time someone else took it over. I just haven’t got the time to do it.

“We need a new venue and we need new blood. If there is a new person to organise it, it could go ahead.”

Local businesswoman Helen Perry, who runs The Party Shop based on Mold High Street, said: “When Tim told me that Mold Carnival was in danger of not happening this year, I was very upset.

“Tim has done a magnificent job over the years and it will be a disaster if his hard work over the years goes to waste.

“I do hope that someone will come forward and help to ensure that this year’s carnival can go ahead.”
