CREATED for the 1997 General Election from the old Clwyd South West and parts of the Wrexham constutuency, Clwyd South incorporates Wrexham Council areas to the south and west of the town and parts of rural Denbighshire, such as Llangollen.
In 1983 the former Clwyd South West seat fell to the Conservatives but Labour took it in 1987 through Martyn Jones, who is standing down at this election.
Mr Jones increased his majority in the subsequent two General Elections but this fell slightly at the 2001 election and a further swing to the Tories in 2005 reduced the Labour majority to 6,348.
It is estimated that the Conservatives would need a swing of 9.92 per cent to take the seat from Labour and it is ranked at 197th on their list of target seats across the UK.
The area is largely rural, although there are old industrial pockets in the areas closer to Wrexham.
Llangollen, which hosts the annual International Musical Eisteddfod, brings valuable tourism to the area. The festival was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
In 2009 the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
