THE owner of Wrexham workshop units wrecked in a massive weekend fire says the cost of repairing the damage is likely to be at least £150,000.

Six firefighter appliances from Wrexham, Johnstown and Chirk turned out to the blaze at the Mountain View Workshops on Rhosddu Industrial Estate.

There are reports that the smoke billowing from the scene was so intense it could be smelled miles away in Wrexham town centre.

The emergency services were alerted at 2.25am on Saturday.

The fire service’s team responding to the call included the aerial ladder platform and environmental protection unit from Wrexham and the incident command unit from Rhyl.

Firefighters used five main jets, two hose reel jets and two sets of breathing apparatus to tackle the flames, which affected three units at the industrial estate.

Alan Roberts, from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said workshops were severely damaged in the blaze.

“Three of the five separate units within the workshops were involved in the fire. These were motor repair and car valeting units,” he said.

“We were concerned about the presence of gas cylinders within the workshops and were able to retrieve all 11 cylinders known to be present.”

The building is owned by Chris Edwards of Gresford, who rents premises out to businesses.

Surveying the scene of devastation in the daylight of Saturday morning, Mr Edwards said: “Looking at it, I would say there is around £150,000 worth of damage, probably more.

“There are sections of steel which are completely buckled and bent and that will have to come down.

“I think all the people with businesses affected have been here.

“The reaction has been one of shock and horror.”

Mr Edwards said he could not put a timescale on how long it would take to repair all the damage to the premises.

“I am getting in contact with my insurance company and we will have to take it forward from there,” he added.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No-one was injured.

A hedge and undergrowth fire at Park Wall Road, Bradley, on Friday evening was started deliberately.

A fire-fighting crew from Wrexham extinguished the blaze.
