A MAN was caught on a supermarket’s CCTV stealing a wireless USB adaptor.

By committing the theft from Asda in Wrexham on March 25 Jonathan Phoenix was in breach of an 18-month suspended prison sentence, Wrexham magistrates court heard.

Phoenix, 33, of Ty Nos, was jailed for 14 days by magistrates after admitting stealing the wireless USB adapter worth £19.17.

Matthew Ellis, prosecuting, said: “The defendant entered the store and headed to the entertainment section. He selected the adapter and walked along an aisle removing the security tag and put it down the front of his jeans to conceal it.”

Phoenix was stopped by security guards outside the store and he walked back inside with them.

But he then attempted to throw the item onto a high shelf to get rid of it, said Mr Ellis.

“He fully admitted it during interview and accepted he had run off from staff and said he did it to get rid of the item,” he said.

The court heard that Phoenix was made the subject of a 16 week suspended prison sentence for 18 months which was imposed on March 9 for theft offences.

Christopher Davies, defending, said: “Jonathan has an unenviable record of offending. He attempted to put the item down the front of his trousers and was caught on CCTV.

“We make no secret that Jonathan has been a drug user but the last few weeks he has been completely clear of illegal drugs in his system.

“The probation service say he is complying and his drug use has stablised and he’s in receipt of methadone.

“It’s low level, it’s unsophisticated and the item was recovered.”

Magistrates activated the suspended sentence and jailed Phoenix for 14 days.
