A TALENTED teenage footballer paid a T-shirt tribute to his grandad.
When 65-year-old Barry Carter of Brynteg died after a battle with leukaemia, grandson Gary Ray wanted to do something special to commemorate his life.
Gary is a striker for Brickfield Under-14s and decided to wear a T-shirt with a special message to Barry which he would unveil if he scored in his next match.
Gary took to the field against Llay United and was soon on the scoresheet, allowing him to reveal the T-shirt.
The words which Gary chose as a tribute to his grandfather were: “Grandad 62 RIP”.
Barry was an exceptional go-kart racer and was so good he earned the British championship title in the mid-1980s.
His racing number was always 62. Gary’s dad, Clive, said: “The idea for the tribute had come from Gary.
“He had a word with the referee before the game to explain about the planned celebration and check it would be OK to go ahead if he scored. We are a close family,”
Gary, a pupil at Ysgol y Grango in Rhos, went on to score twice more for his hat-trick, but didn’t take his shirt off again until the end of the match.
Gary was doing well at the Chester City academy until the club was expelled from the Blue Square Premier.
He is now attracting interest from Crewe Alexandra.
