A RAILWAY station is set for key improvements after being given a cash boost.

Wrexham Council has secured £75,000 towards turning Chirk Station into a transport hub.

The cash, which has come through a transport grant from the Welsh Assembly Government, will be spent on a programme of improvements.

These include the introduction of bus lay-bys and areas for passengers waiting outside the station.

It is hoped the measures will make it easier for passengers to go from buses to trains and vice versa.

A study is also being prepared to find out whether the station car park can be enlarged.

There are further plans to change the bus routes and timetables later this spring to improve links between the Ceiriog Valley, the wider Chirk area, the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site and Llangollen so that better connections between buses and trains can be introduced.

Cllr David Bithell, the council’s lead member for the environment and transport, said: "We are committed to further enhancing facilities at our key transport interchanges, as we have recently done at Wrexham General and Ruabon rail stations, to make sustainable access for residents and visitors as attractive as we can.

“This latest scheme maintains our policy of developing attractive public transport options towards our corporate priority of reducing emissions and energy use."
