WORK to install traffic calming measures outside a school was delayed – after workers put in the wrong kind of speed humps.

Contractors Enterprise had been introducing road safety measures outside Ysgol Bwlchgwyn after Welsh Assembly funding was given to Wrexham Council under the Safe Routes in the Community scheme.

But the work had to be redone because of an ‘oversight’ which saw humps produced to the wrong specification.

Enterprise said they would foot the bill for the additional work.

Residents living nearby said workers had been forced to dig up the humps and reinstall them from Monday.

Martin Wright, Wrexham Council’s chief transportation and asset management officer said: “The Safe Routes in the Community project currently under construction outside Bwlchgwyn Primary School consists of a range of different calming features and traffic safety works including a 20mph zone and footway improvements.

“Works are being carried out by our contractor and unfortunately due to an oversight, three individual features were constructed to the wrong specification.

“Remedial action was identified and this work has now been carried out at the contractor’s expense.

“The project is now nearing completion and any further disruptions will be kept to a minimum. Wrexham Council apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

A spokeswoman for contractors Enterprise said: “Enterprise has been carrying out a traffic calming scheme in Bwlchgwyn to make the road near the school safer by reducing the width, increasing signage and creating speed humps.

“Unfortunately there was a misunderstanding around the specification of the speed humps. This has now been corrected at no expense to the council.”

Cllr David Kelly, who represents Bwlchgwyn, said: “(Enterprise) have made the error but it is at their cost and not at the council’s cost.

“Residents are a little bit concerned but it will not cost the local authority any extra.

“The majority of residents accept what’s going on and to be honest the traffic calming is being done in relation to the Safe Routes scheme.

“Most people will be pleased this work is being carried out.”
