HISTORIANS are calling for an annual celebration to mark a major event in Flintshire’s history.
Between 1244 and 1246 a bloody war was fought between Dafydd II of Wales, who was born in Bagillt, and Henry III of England.
On March 28 765 years ago, Mold Castle fell to Dafydd’s forces.
Amateur historian Adam Phillips, from Mold, said: “During the conflict Mold Castle, which was held by Lord Roger Montalt, fell to Dafydd’s forces.
"The interesting thing was that it is believed he used catapults to bring the castle down.”
Mr Phillips and fellow historians Steve Griffiths and Andrew Burgess put up flags at the castle site on Bailey Hill this week to mark the occasion.
They are now calling for it to be a major highlight of Mold’s calendar of events.
Mr Phillips said: “I’m surprised that the town council doesn’t celebrate this day every year. For an occupied castle to fall to Welsh hands should be something the town council revels in and makes an occasion of.
“This could be something for Mold to remember.”
