A 38-YEAR-OLD Wrexham man is in a critical condition after sustaining a serious head injury during an alleged assault in Chester.

The man, who has not been named, was only identified after an urgent appeal for witnesses by police. He is thought to have been attacked at the Temple Bar in Chester city centre.

He was originally rushed by ambulance to the Countess of Chester Hospital but later transferred to the specialist head injuries unit at Walton Hospital on Merseyside.

Cheshire Police say his next of kin are with him at his hospital bedside. Police were called to the Temple Bar following the incident shortly before 11.30pm on Friday.

As they were unable to identify the victim they put out an appeal for witnesses, giving his description and a list of what he was wearing at the time of the attack, which included a black leather jacket and blue jeans.

The only clue officers had was a one-day return bus ticket he had in his possession which had been bought at Wrexham bus station on Friday afternoon.

Yesterday morning, police announced he had been identified as a 38-year-old man from the Wrexham area.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: “His next of kin have been informed and are with him in Walton Hospital, where he is in a critical condition.

“A 30-year-old man from Chester has been arrested and is continuing to assist police with their enquiries.”

Officers are still appealing for witnesses to the incident and have urged anyone who was in the Temple Bar around 11.30pm on Friday to contact them on 0845 4580000, or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.
