A Wrexham teenager who overcame cancer and has since raised thousands of pounds for the charities that helped him in his recovery is eager to continue his fundraising efforts.

Christopher Jones, 17, of Rossett, organised the hugely successful Caps on 4 Cancer campaign last year which has so far raised nearly £4,000 for his chosen charities.

Now Christopher is determined to boost its profile further and to raise even more money by initiating a whole new series of fundraising events.

Last year he introduced the Caps and Hats on 4 Cancer Day which encouraged people at schools and workplaces across the region to wear their hats for the day and donate to the charity.

The event was significantly boosted when a family friend with contacts in the horse racing world donated 11 silk jockey caps which were signed by riders who took part in the Grand National.

All the hard work helped Christopher achieve his Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award and he hopes this year’s events will help him gain his Gold Award.

A whole new programme of events has been arranged for this year designed to raise more money for the charities, starting with a cookery demonstration tomorrow by Leigh Myers, executive chef at the Grosvenor Pulford Hotel. The event will be held at the All Saints School in Gresford and tickets cost £5, which include a glass of wine.

There are also plans for a second Caps on 4 Cancer Day on Friday, May 7.

The money raised will be split between Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Oncology Department in Liverpool, Children’s Cancer Support (CHICs), Cancer and Leukaemia in Children (CLIC) and the Ronald McDonald House, all of which helped Christopher during his recovery.

Christopher was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and then acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when he was four. He underwent chemotherapy every day for three years and could not walk and was registered disabled. He has been treatment-free for nine years now.

He left Darland High School last year, passing 12 GCSEs and has started working for Kellogg’s after a successful application to be an electrical engineering apprentice.
