A MOTHER is calling for urgent safety measures outside a Flintshire primary school after her daughter narrowly avoided serious injury when she was hit by a car.

Ashley Adams, 29, says her eight-year-old daughter, Chloe, was walking the short journey home from Custom House Lane School, Connah’s Quay, with her friends last Tuesday when she tripped and fell into the path of an oncoming car.

She said: “It is just your worst nightmare to get a phone call to say your daughter has been run-over.

“She slipped on something and fell into the road.

“She said she started to get up and she looked up and there was a car there and she just couldn’t move.”

The car hit Chloe’s head and knee and she was taken by ambulance to the Countess of Chester Hospital where she was kept in until 9pm for observation.

The mum-of-three added: “It was one of those freak accidents, but it could have been a lot worse. There were a lot of factors on that day that prevented it from being more serious.

“A bus had just pulled off, which slowed the traffic down, but if that bus hadn’t been there God knows what would have happened.”

Chloe went back to the school on Friday, but has been left traumatised by the incident.

Her mum added: “She was crying that she didn’t want to go back to school because she didn’t want to walk down the path again.”

Mrs Adams now wants warning signs erected on approach to the school as well as a safety barrier outside the school gates and for the speed limit to be slashed from 30mph to 20mph.

She said: “If there had been railings there she wouldn’t have been able to fall into the road. There are no signs to even say that there’s a school there and it’s a very busy road.

“I don’t want this to happen to another child.”

Connah’s Quay councillor Aaron Shotton added: “For any child to be hurt outside a school is a nightmare for parents and Custom House Lane School is a popular school with Mold Road being very busy.

"I urge the county council to introduce safety measures to protect the school children.”

Councillors and the school have now launched a campaign to get the safety measures installed and a meeting has been set up with highways engineers at Flintshire County Council to discuss safety options.
