A WREXHAM village hall has been given a revamp at a total cost of nearly £80,000.

More than 120 people attended an open day at the centre in Bangor-on-Dee with the opening ceremony being performed by Wrexham mayor Arwel Gwynn Jones.

He was welcomed by management committee chairman Andy Powick  who explained how the hall had been transformed during the last two years and is now capable of holding a wide range of activities.

There are now 12 regular users providing activities for groups from pre-school age to senior citizens.

Mr Powick pointed out that none of the work would have been possible without the financial support of a number of organisations.

In 2008 the kitchen was refurbished and windows were replaced. Grants were awarded for the work by Northern Marches Cymru, the Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW) and Wrexham Council.

In the second half of 2009 major work was undertaken which involved removing the central pillars, laying a new floor, fitting a sliding partition, upgrading the heating and improving access for the disabled.

A grant of £35,000 was awarded under the Landfill Communities Fund by Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN).

The final phase of the project, which included the provision of sound, lighting and projection equipment, a hearing loop and the construction of a small stage, was completed at the end of the year.

The total cost of the project was £78,000 of which £7,000 had been provided from reserves built up through the village lottery.
