A TOTAL of £200,000 is to be invested in a scheme to alleviate flooding in a Wrexham village.

Welsh Water began work yesterday to increase capacity on the local wastewater network in Coedpoeth which will enable it to deal with larger volumes of stormwater during periods of heavy rainfall.

During adverse weather conditions, properties on Willow Bank road have experienced flooding problems and the upgrades will help alleviate the risk of this happening in future.

The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of March, will involve upgrading the existing sewer on Willow Bank Road.

In order for the scheme to be carried out safely, the road between the junction with Talwrn Road and junction with Gwern y Gaseg Road will be closed for the duration of the scheme.

It will also be necessary for traffic lights to be situated on Talwrn Road from next Monday for one week.

Access for residents will be unaffected by the road closure and a diversion will be clearly marked.

Clara Hughes, Welsh Water's communications representative said: “We realise the distress wastewater flooding can cause and are committed to tackling the problem.

Our project in Coedpoeth reflects this and our goal to provide customers with a first class service.”

Clara added: “We appreciate the disruption the work may cause but these measures will be necessary to ensure the work is carried out safely.

“We would like to apologise to people before hand for any inconvenience they may experience and hope that people will bear with us while the work is ongoing.”

Welsh Water says it has liaised with relevant bodies, including Wrexham Council and Environment Agency Wales during the project’s planning stages.
