TRIBUTES have been paid to a well known Wrexham shopkeeper described as being “at the hub of the community”.
Godfrey Evans, 82, known as Goss, ran A E Evans convenience store on Church Street, Rhostyllen, all his working life.
He suffered a heart attack on January 31 after going for Sunday lunch at his local pub.
Godfrey was rushed to the Wrexham Maelor Hospital but passed away during the early hours of Monday.
Mandy Roberts, of Vicarage Hall, Rhostyllen, said: “He was very kind.
“You could knock on the door when the shop was closed for a pint of milk.
“He was a nice gentleman who was at the hub of the community.”
David Roberts, who lives opposite the shop on Church Street, said: “It’s like something is missing on the road.
“Everybody is shocked.”
Cllr Mark Pritchard said: “He was an absolute gentleman and was a real character.
“The children from Rhostyllen have put flowers outside his shop.
“It is the end of an era.”
Cllr Pritchard said that years ago workers from the Bersham pit would come to the shop for their cigarettes.
Godfrey and his family also founded a number of football teams in the area.
