A DEVASTATED group of Flintshire Cub Scouts has made a heartfelt appeal for a new hut after their HQ was ruined by floodwater.

The 1st Broughton Cubs were excited about the planned re-opening of their hut last week.

The group was disbanded a year ago but leaders who got there early to set up for the opening night found horrendous flood damage caused by a burst pipe.

“The cubs were so disappointed,” said Jenny Guy, chairman of the group which runs the cubs.

“They were really gutted because they were looking forward to it. All these excited Cubs were turning up for their first night and had to be turned away.

“A lot of the parents stayed back to help.

“The main hall is completely wet. The ceiling is down in the kitchen and in the disabled toilet and spare room. Every room is wet right through.

“It was a hot pipe that had burst and the insurance is not really sure why. At the moment we are using dehumidifiers in the main hall to try to salvage the ceiling.”

The group had disbanded a year ago because there were not enough leaders to run it.

Jenny said: “The previous leaders had to give up because of other commitments.

“We sent our Cubs to other groups in the local area although they didn’t want to travel out of the village. Now we have got four brand new leaders who are raring to go.

“The insurance company has closed us down for at least two months and we have nowhere to go. The cubs will have to wait until we find another venue.”

The Cubs meet on a Monday between 6.30pm-8pm.

The Beavers, who also share the building, meet on a Wednesday between 6pm-7pm.

Jenny said: “Ideally we’d like to stick to these days because the children have other things to do. We tried the Institute but that is booked up. The church is also an option.”

She added: “We’d like to stay in Broughton village but we know we can’t afford to be choosy.”
