This is a round-up of Flintshire Council's affected services for today Friday, January 8.

Social Services for Adults

All the Council’s day centres for older people will remain closed, and transport to those centres has been cancelled. Service users have been contacted individually about their care needs.

Some transport is operating for people who go to other centres for younger adults, and some centres are open.  Service users are being contacted individually about their arrangements.

Emergency housing repairs are being prioritised to ensure the most critical cases are dealt with first.

Leisure Centres

All 6 leisure centres are open – Deeside Leisure Centre, Flint Pavilion, Holywell Leisure Centre, Buckley Leisure Centre, Mold Leisure Centre and Connah’s Quay Pool.

Saltney and Hope Sports Centres are also now open.

Flintshire’s main libraries are open at Broughton, Buckley, Connah’s Quay, Flint, Holywell and Mold. They will remain open as long as weather conditions permit.

If travelling you are advised to telephone the library before setting out. Please also telephone smaller libraries to check that they are open before you visit.

There has been no mobile library or housebound services operating today.

Roads and gritting

Across Wales, local authorities have again been undertaking extensive gritting runs because of the poor weather conditions during one of the most lengthy periods of severe weather for over 30 years.  This has been an unprecedented scale of continuous salting and gritting. With these treacherous weather conditions set to continue, it is presenting huge challenges for all councils.

Flintshire Council gritting teams have been working around the clock for nearly four weeks since the start of the cold spell.  The snow and freezing conditions are set to continue.

Priority routes (over 400 miles) are being salted twice a day and all are open and passable with extreme care needed in places.  This accounts for 47% of the road network and is the third highest coverage in Wales.  The majority of minor roads have been ploughed but not gritted.

At the start of the winter, our two salt barns at Alltami and Halkyn were fully stocked with nearly 5,000 tonnes of salt.  There is no budget limit for the winter maintenance service and the Council will continue to treat road gritting as a key priority with the salt stocks available for as long as the cold conditions prevail.
