CONFUSED lorry drivers are causing traffic chaos and endangering lives on quiet streets, Flintshire town leaders have claimed.

Members of Flint Town Council say HGV drivers who use Old London Road and Halkyn Street in the town’s Coleshill ward, are putting residents and property at risk, and are now urging highways chiefs at Flintshire Council to take urgent action to put a stop to the problem.

They believe is it caused by lorry drivers being misguided by their satellite navigation systems and say more signs need to be put in place to guide them to main roads.

Cllr Alex Aldridge said: “This town council has asked Flintshire Council for help with this problem on many occasions and nothing has ever been done.

“It poses a real danger to residents and other motorists, as these residential streets are just not made for 40-tonne lorries.

“I once saw a lorry turn 360 degrees while waiting at the traffic lights near Flint council offices and I couldn’t believe my eyes.

"It was very lucky no-one was coming the other way.

“We need to contact Flintshire Council again as a matter of urgency and request a site meeting as soon as possible.”

The town council agreed to contact Carl Longland, the council’s director of environment, to ask him to look at the possibility of providing more signs.

Members also agreed to pay for the signs through town council funds, as long as its logo could be placed on them.

Town councillor John Hughes said: “We cannot blame these lorry drivers. Many of them are from Europe and it is not their fault if their SatNavs are taking them in the wrong direction.

"It is up to us to make sure this matter is addressed as soon as possible.”
