A TAXI firm was hit by arsonists in an attack which caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Ian Griffith, proprietor of Jimmy’s Llay Cars, was left picking up the pieces after the blaze in the early hours of yesterday.

He spent the day assessing the extent of the damage caused to the company in Miners Road, Llay.

Ian said two minibuses and a car were totally destroyed. The car contained maintenance tools and chipped keys.

Radio equipment was also taken from the firm’s office.

Ian said: “I am going to have to look at exactly what we have lost and take it from there. There is damage worth thousands of pounds, that much is obvious.”

He only took over running Jimmy’s Llay Cars about a month ago, buying the business from James Povey.

James still helps with the business and said he was shocked at the scene of devastation when he arrived on the site to open up.

He said: “I could hardly believe my eyes when I got here. I’d left the office on Wednesday evening and everything was all right, no sign of trouble at all.”

Ian added: “We are still open and we will continue to trade. This attack is malicious.

"The first I knew was when I got a call from Jimmy. It was a real mess.”

North Wales Fire And Rescue Service said it received a call to attend the blaze at about 1.45am on Thursday. A spokesman confirmed the fire had been started deliberately.

Inspector Paul Jones of North Wales Police said: “I want to assure members of the public this was an isolated incident.”

Police said that four vehicles were involved, which is being treated as suspected arson and an appeal has been made for anyone with any information to get in contact with officers.

The attack is the second of its kind in the Wrexham area in the last week.
Last Friday night seven cars, worth an estimated £130,000, were torched deliberately at Oaklands Chauffeured Vehicles in Acrefair.
