DRUGS with a street value of many thousands of pounds have been discovered in raids by police in Wrexham.

On Wednesday officers searched a house in Newbridge near  Wrexham, where a large quantity of cannabis under cultivation was found.

Later that day police say they swooped on a terraced house in Edward Street, Wrexham, where they found between 300 and 500 cannabis plants.

Police have hailed the raids as a success in combating drugs in the area.
A Vietnamese man was arrested inside the property at Newbridge and was interviewed by police yesterday.

Two people were arrested in connection with the discovery in Edward Street and were also questioned.

A police officer at Edward Street told the Leader: “It is a large cannabis factory with between three and five hundred plants. There was a substantial amount of cannabis plants in the front room and two upstairs bedrooms.

“There was also all the hydroponics, the lights and reflectives used to grow it.

“It’s one of a number of factories found in Wrexham and is all part of an ongoing operation. It’s good police work.”

It is understood a similar number of plants were found at the Cefn Mawr site.

A resident on Edward Street said: “My wife heard shouting and we thought there was a fight outside. It was a shock to see loads of police cars blocking the road.

“People were running about and police were shouting ‘stay down.”

Police tape surrounded the property in Newbridge and police officers were on guard outside.

Last week Insp Alex Goss’s team in the town carried out 15 search warrants for drugs and stolen property, while four drug-related warrants were executed in the Rhos area.

"The raids took place following intelligence received from the public.

Chief Sup Ruth Purdie, divisional commander, said: “We appeal to the public to give us information, and they have my assurance that we will act upon it effectively.”
