CALLS have been made to install road safety measures outside a Flintshire primary school after a pupil was hit by a car.

An eight-year-old girl was involved in a collision outside Custom House Lane School on Mold Road, Connah’s Quay, shortly before 3.30pm on Tuesday.

The youngster escaped with just cuts and bruises and was taken by ambulance to the Countess of Chester Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Headteacher Kate Fox-Parry told the Leader: “She was not trying to cross the road, she was skipping along and she slipped and fell into the road.

“The driver did very well to stop and he only slightly knocked her.

“She’s not back in school today, but I’ve spoken to her mum and she’s fine. She’s bit shocked and has a few bruises and scratches.”

Community leaders are now calling for a safety barrier to be installed outside the school gate along with warning signs for motorists.

Connah’s Quay councillor Bernie Attridge, who has two of his three children at the school, has requested an urgent meeting with council highways chiefs.

He said: “I will be demanding a steel fence is put outside the entrance where children exit the school and I will be asking for warning signs to be put on the approaches to the school.

“I want to try and make sure an accident doesn’t happen again and hopefully these measures will help to keep our children safe.”

The school does already have a zebra crossing and a lollipop lady.

Mrs Fox-Parry added: “We will work together with the county council and would support any artificial safety aids.

“We have some parents who cross the road and don’t use the crossing. My message to them is they need to be setting an example to the children. We want to encourage the children to use the crossing.”

Dave Faulkner, Flintshire Council head of highways and transportation, said: “We will be meeting with local members to see whether extra safety measures are needed in addition to those already in place.”
