A GROUP of Scouts in Wrexham slept rough to raise £1,300 towards the Haiti earthquake fund.

Members of the 1st Rhosnesni Scouts camped in boxes and on plastic sheeting near their scout premises in Rhosnesni from 7pm on Friday until 9am on Monday.

Business Networking International (BNI) Wrexham kickstarted the fundraiser with a donation of £700.

Scout Laura Bentley, from Marchwiel, gave a presentation to BNI Wrexham about the Haiti earthquake and how the Scouts plan to help the appeal.

All the money will be donated to ShelterBox, an international disaster relief charity.

Assistant scout leader Sam Roberts said: “We’re amazed by the total that has been donated.

“We’d aimed to raise the £490 it costs to put together and send out one ShelterBox, but we’ve now got enough for more than two.

“We’d like to thank everyone who’s donated.”

Jason Thelwell, President of BNI Wrexham, said: “As a group of businessmen we were only too happy to help out.

“So many teenagers get a bad press, but when Laura came along to say what they were doing we were very impressed.”

Laura’s dad, David Bentley, said: “They thoroughly enjoyed the sponsored sleepover.

“It has given them appreciation, although it is very different in Haiti, what it is like having to sleep outside in makeshift shelters.”
