PLANS to demolish a Wrexham primary school and build a new one on the same site could be given the green light next week.

Councillors on the local authority’s planning committee could give the go-ahead on Monday to the proposals for Rhosymedre Primary School, which has accommodated increased pupil numbers in recent years.

In a report which recommends the council’s plans are approved, chief planning officer Lawrence Isted said: “A new school has been needed for some time as pupil numbers have risen and the present school is not fit for purpose for present and future educational needs.”

The current site is located off Hampden Way on the Plas Madoc housing estate.

Mr Isted continues: “The proposed school building lies slightly further south than the existing building. Its design is based upon the new school building at ID Hooson School, Rhos.

“The U-shaped layout would suit the Rhosymedre site having similar site characteristics of those on the ID Hooson site (ie a narrow site).

“Facing materials and colours however will differ to create a distinctive building. I am satisfied with the general layout and appearance which will enhance the overall visual appearance of the site.”

One letter of representation from the occupier of a nearby property had claimed the proposed new site was too close to the Plas Isaf estate.

Mr Isted said: “I note the comments raised by an adjoining occupier with regards to siting, but the new building is no closer to Plas Isaf than the existing school.

“In addition, the U-shape layout will help reduce noise levels as the majority of entrance points to and from classrooms are on the inside of the building.

"I do not therefore consider there will be any additional impact upon the amenity of neighbouring residents.”
