THE operators of Wales’ highest bakery are using their loaf to beat the big freeze.

The Village Bakery in Minera has seen demand leap by 20 per cent as temperatures have plunged.

But they’ve pulled out all the stops to make sure their customers have been able to get regular supplies.

That has included laying on a special early morning 4x4 ‘taxi’ service for staff to keep the ovens busy despite a foot of snow outside the bakery which is almost 1,000 feet above sea level.

Joint managing director Robin Jones said: “We have seen a marked increase in demand and so far we are happy to say we have been able to meet that demand whether it is from the corner shop or the supermarket.

“Our supplies have been getting through and we’ve been able to get everything through to our customers.

“We’re a local bakery in a rural area and we have to be able to cope with these situations – it is winter and sometimes you are going to get snow so you have to be ready for it.”

The firm employs more than 200 people at its two bakeries in the Wrexham area, including over 180 at its main site in Minera.

It also has a high-tech bakery on Wrexham Industrial Estate which employs 25 people and specialises in making gluten-free bread for people with coeliac disease.
