COMMUNITY spirit has shone through to help residents across Wrexham in the big freeze.

Many drivers were forced to abandon their vehicles and walk home.

Groups of people of all ages pulled together to help push cars which were stuck in the snow.

One of those stuck was Carol Wynne and her husband Aylmer Wynne who were travelling from Gwersyllt to Snowdon Drive on the Ty Gwyn estate in Wrexham.

Carol described how ‘Good Samaritans’ helped to push their car on Llay New Road near the Lindop Brothers garage.

She said: “We came from my daughter’s house at about 6pm and went through Bradley.

“We struggled to get onto Llay New Road and a group of people were there pushing cars and had even pushed an ambulance.

“It was absolutely brilliant to see local people out there giving a hand.

“When cars were stopping they were skidding everywhere, it was frightening.

“We wouldn’t have got past there if they hadn’t been pushing.

“It’s great to see the old community spirit coming across, this was what it was like in the 1960s.”

Andy Carlin was another motorist helped by the Good Samaritans.

He said: “I was on the way back from Llay Industrial Estate to Oswestry and just couldn’t get up the hill.

“Then these five or six young people turned up and pushed me to the top. They were brilliant and deserve recognition for their efforts because they were helping loads of people.”

Another motorist praised the public for pushing cars up Ruthin Road towards Coedpoeth.

Wrexham Maelor hospital worker June John left work to get to her Minera home at about 4.30pm.

She said: “Everybody was struggling to get up the hill with the snow coming down.

“It continued to get worse and before we knew it some locals came down and started pushing all the cars one at a time.”

June eventually had to abandon her car in a side street and called her boyfriend Glen Walker to come from Minera to help her.

She added: “I would like to say a big thank you to the Coedpoeth residents who came to the aid of the drivers by pushing our cars.”

Meanwhile Buckley Cllr Carol Ellis warned children and walkers to stay away from the icy Trap pool in the town.

She said: “It looks very beautiful but I want to put out a warning that although it looks tempting it’s very, very, very dangerous.”

Cllr Ellis said Liverpool Road was “completely blocked” for about two hours on Tuesday evening.

She added there were more than 20 cars which had been abandoned on the road.
