The heritage and history of a former mining site will be celebrated in a special open day.

Flintshire Countryside Service and the Point of Ayr Community Heritage Group are organising an open day and celebration event at DangerPoint on Sunday.

A marked circular trail with a series of interpretation panels and a leaflet has already been developed but on the day, those who prefer to use smartphones and iPads will be able to try out a new app for the trail packed with images and audio.

This has been funded by Cadwyn Clwyd and is the first of a series of 18 digital trails being developed across North-East Wales.

Point of Ayr was the last deep pit in North Wales, closing in 1996.

It has long been known as the ‘forgotten pit’ and life revolved around the pit in communities such as Ffynnongroyw, Gwespyr, Mostyn and Gronant.

Point of Ayr Community Heritage Group (POACH) worked with Flintshire Countryside Service to secure a £40,500 grant from the Heritage Lottery fund.

John Wiltshire, POACH chairman, said: “We are all really excited to bring the mine back to life, and to educate both local people and visitors about the mine’s importance, not just locally, but also to the heritage of Wales as a whole.”

On the open day, a special pit pony sculpture harking back to the days of their work in the mine will also be on show.

Cambria Band will lead a procession to the Coast Path, where the sculpture will be based.

Delyn AM Hannah Blythyn and Cllr Carolyn Thomas will unveil the pony sculpture at 1pm.

Bridlewood Riding Stables are bringing a docile Welsh cob to the event, so visitors will be able to see what the ponies would have looked like. Some of the older miners who worked with ponies will be on hand to talk to visitors.

Cllr Thomas, Flintshire Council cabinet member for Streetscene and countryside, said: “I am really pleased that by working in partnership with POACH, the group has secured this Heritage Lottery Fund grant which has enabled them to breathe new life into this important part of our heritage.

“It really is a wonderful project and a real asset to the county.”

The event will be held between 11am and 3pm.
