Councillors have applauded plans to build an extra care housing scheme on the site of two old schools.

Following the success of Llys Jasmine extra care scheme which opened in Mold four years ago, Wales and West Housing has put in a planning application to build their second extra care scheme in Flintshire.

The scheme, subject to planning permission, will provide much needed, high quality accommodation backed up by 24 hour on-site care and support for adults.

The planning application includes construction of the scheme with an associated communal area on Halkyn Street, Holywell at the site of the former Ysgol Perth y Terfryn, which would be demolished if plans went ahead.

Last year the Leader reported Ysgol Perth y Terfyn closed down, along with the former Holywell High School building and Ysgol y Fron, to form a new high school and primary school – Ysgol Treffynnon and Ysgol Maes-y-Felin.

The campus now accommodates for 600 high school learners and 315 primary school pupils.

At Holywell Town Council, community leaders were delighted to hear of the plans to build an extra care housing scheme.

Cllr Karin Davies said: “They originally wanted to put this on the car park opposite the hospital and we opposed these plans.

“We proposed other sites and one of them was Ysgol Perth y Terfyn.

“It is an ideal place to put it and I support this 100 per cent.”

Cllr Paul Johnson added: “There will be about 30 new jobs in a place which is fantastic. We need to keep the plans as local as we can.”

Councillors were worried about the pavement on the side of the road which would lead to the town centre from the site of the proposed scheme, as they believe it is “not wide enough” for pedestrians to use safely.

Cllr Ted Palmer said: “The pavement goes all the way to town so that will need sorting.”

Cllr Palmer also confirmed he supports the scheme and applaud the other “wonderful” extra care schemes in Mold and Shotton.

A public consultation was also held this week and residents welcomed plans for the scheme.

Cllr Bernie Attridge, Flintshire Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “Housing remains one of the council’s top priorities – not only are we building new council homes and developing more affordable housing through NEW Homes, but we continue to work in partnership to build specifically designed extra care housing for our local residents.”

Shayne Hembrow, deputy chief executive and commercial director of Wales and West Housing, said: “This scheme, subject to planning permission, will provide much needed, high quality accommodation backed up by 24 hour on-site care and support for adults.

”Wales and West Housing believes in making a difference to people’s lives, homes and communities and this scheme will offer an excellent option for those living in the Holywell area.”
