William is called up for Wales

A young cricketer who turned out for a team six years his senior has been called up to represent Wales.

William Norman, 10, who started playing cricket at Buckley aged seven, will turn out for Wales’ under 11 squad later this year just two years after stepping up to the hard ball format.

The youngster, who made his debut for brother Joseph’s under 15 side last year at the age of just nine, was selected to play for North East Wales U10s when he was eight years old and has enjoyed two successful seasons playing regional cricket. The all-rounder also captains the North East Wales U11s side.

William started the trial process for Wales last October and has been taking part in training sessions in South Wales throughout the winter months.

He attended the final trial last weekend.

Mark Jones, chairman of Buckley Cricket Club, said: “Proud does not adequately describe how we as a club feel about the news that William has made the national squad. He is an exceptional talent and works so hard to improve every aspect of his game.”

Adam Shaw, head coach at Buckley, said: “No junior works harder than William at his game.

“It just shows what practice can achieve. He is an inspiration to those around him.”

William’s parents Lucy and John, who are also on the management committee at Buckley, said: “We thank all the coaching team at Buckley and North East Wales for all their support.”
