A community leader has called on Flintshire to bid for a Heathrow logistics hub.

Heathrow Airport announced it will be searching for four firms across the UK to build a logistics hub which will support the proposed £18bn expansion of the airport.

The airport plans to have sites where materials can be brought together and prefabricated.

Cllr Matt Wright, former cabinet member for economic development at Flintshire Council, has urged the county to bid for a logistics hub.

He believes the Enterprise Zone in Deeside would be the “ideal site”.

The Leader reported that the site was opened in 2012 after Deeside was announced as one of five enterprise zones by the Welsh Government in a bid to attract new investment.

Cllr Wright said: “An ideal site is the Enterprise Zone at Deeside. It has good transport links, large buildings and room for further large buildings. Suppliers there have a wide range of experience and could draw in the skills of other parts of Wales and North West England utilising the Mersey Dee Alliance and North Wales Economic Ambition Board.

“Part of the steelworks site was already building pre-fabricated buildings and we have pre-coated steels to hand.

“We also of course have the aerospace experience in engineering that could make for innovative architectural projects.”

Mr Wright, who has put his name forward to the Conservative Party to be the next MP for Delyn, was also involved in manufacturing and worked for QinetiQ, a defence technology company, before becoming a Flintshire councillor in 2004.
