RARELY seen historic footage of events in Wrexham are to get a special screening in the town.

Four Wrexham-based films make up part of the ‘Made in My Town’ screenings organised by Film Hub Wales, and will be shown later this month.

Archive footage includes what is believed to be the earliest international football match ever captured on film, between Wales and Ireland at the Racecourse in 1906.

Also caught on film is a Minera ‘mineral’ wagon journey filmed in 1965, a Wrexham Co-op Society procession in July 1912, and clips of other events between 1938 and 1940, such as the Cobden Flour Mill chimney being demolished along with the Town Hall.

The time of the screening in Wrexham has yet to be announced, but it will take place at the library on Rhosddu Road, on January 25, following similar events in Neath, Newport and Swansea.

Hana Lewis, of Film Hub Wales said: “There’s something very special about archive film, it offers a window to an unseen world, where we can press ‘play’ on the forgotten past.

“We’re delighted to work with the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales and our partner venues on four special ‘Made in My Town’ screenings this January.

“With live musical accompaniment, local history groups and photography exhibitions on offer to accompany the screenings, audiences will be entertained as they recognise their home towns on the big screen and they may even see a relative or two.

“It’s crucial we preserve and exhibit these important films for our and future generations.”
