IT’S not every day that a footballer from the Welsh National League receives an international call-up.

However, that is what has happened for Brickfield Rangers midfielder Brad Miguel, who has been called up by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for their upcoming two-legged CONCACAF World Cup 2018 qualifier against Guyana.

Miguel, 21, is currently studying Business and Accounting at Glyndwr Unviersity and began his association with Brickfield when he started playing for their Futsal team in the local Wrexham league held at the university.

He was then invited to sign on for Brickfield’s first team and was part of Pete Gabriel’s side who narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier Division on the final day.

Formerly on Wycombe Wanderers books, Miguel - who was born in Kingstown, St Vincent before moving to England - joined Cincinnati Bearcats in the USA before moving to Wrexham to study.

The first-leg, to be played in the coastal town of Arnos Vale in Saint Vincent, takes place on Wednesday, June 10 (8pm kick-off BST) before the return leg in Georgetown, Guyana, on Monday, June 15 (12am kick-off BST).

The winner progresses to round three of the CONCACAF qualifier for 2018 World Cup, set to be held in Russia.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Miguel, who has flown out to Saint Vincent to prepare for the two matches.

“Every young kid growing up dreams of playing for their national team in the World Cup, so when I got asked to come over I jumped at the opportunity.

“We’ve been training twice a day since I arrived, working on our fitness and tactics.

“It’s vital we’re fit because of the high temperatures we’ll be facing on game day.

“I’ve enjoyed my time with Brickfield, it’s a great set-up with a great bunch of lads.

“It wasn’t the best of seasons for the club last season but with the players we’ve got at the club there’s potential to go far.”

“Brad is over here doing a degree at Glyndwr University and he got involved with Brickfield when he started playing for our Futsal side,” said Brickfield football director Andrew Ruscoe.

“We got him involved in the first XI and he’s put in some great performances during the second half of the season.

“There certainly aren’t many international players turning out in the Welsh National League so we’re delighted for Brad.

“It’s definitely the first international call-up we can remember for Brickfield and I can’t think of too many people who’ve got international caps whilst playing in the Wrexham leagues.”

Ruscoe believes there is a lot to be excited about at Brickfield, as they gear up for the official opening of their new ground, Clywedog Park, off Ruthin Road.

The club are aiming for promotion to the Cymru Alliance, and welcome Evo-Stik Premier Division outfit Trafford FC for the opening match on July 11, before Shaun Reid travels down with his Warrington Town side on July 18, with both games kicking off at 2.30pm.

“We are pushing as a club to get up in the Cymru Alliance, that’s the next step for the club and the main thinking behind the new ground and a new stand is being put in this summer,” he explained.

“Brad being called up just helps the club go from strength to strength as we try to attract new players to the club.

“We’ve got top calibre opposition coming for some pre-season friendlies. Trafford FC ae the opposition for the official opening, and we welcome Warrington Town the following week.

“All the hard work is done by volunteers and the majority of effort comes from our chairman Paul Hooson.”

Brickfield follow up their opening friendlies with home matches against Wrexham under 21s on July 21 (6.30pm), before facing AFC Liverpool on July 25 (2.30pm).
