A woman has spoken of her horror as she awoke to see her car in flames outside her Wrexham home.

Laura Roberts, 37, of Broom Grove in Caia Park, told how she was woken by a neighbour shouting outside.

“When I got up and had a look my car was just in flames,” she said.

“I was absolutely devastated.”

Miss Roberts was asleep with her partner Richard Hamley, 39, when the car was set ablaze at about 1.40am on Sunday.

Her grandchildren Sonny, two, and Rogan, one, were also in the house.

Miss Roberts said the engine of the car, which she had for about two years, had “absolutely gone” as a result of the blaze.

Of the fire she added: “I’m angry more than anything. I’m really upset about it.

“It’s horrendous that somebody can go and do that. I had my grandchildren in the house – it’s quite scary that somebody could do that.”

She said she needed the car help look after her daughter Siobhan, who suffers epileptic fits.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service firefighters were called to Broom Grove at about 1.45am after reports a car was on fire.

There was 100 per cent damage to the Volkswagen Touran’s engine compartment and 50 per cent damage to the driver’s area.

A fire service spokesman confirmed the blaze had been started deliberately and one hose reel jet as well as breathing apparatus was used to tackle the fire.

Inspector Paul Wycherley, of Wrexham police, said CCTV footage showed two figures crouching at the front of the car “at the material time” of the offence.

In the footage, one of the suspects is wearing a dark hooded top and light trousers, and the second wearing all dark clothing.

Insp Wycherley added tofficers would be collecting and analysing more CCTV footage to assist with the investigation.

Anyone with information on the fire can contact North Wales Police on 101, quoting reference RC17149250.
