Green fingered youngsters joined forces with lunch club members to launch the 18th edition of an annual garden competition.

Pupils from Hafod Y Wern school in Caia Park joined up with lunch club members from Deva House to launch the Caia Park garden competition, which is run by Caia Park Environmental Group in partnership with the community council.

Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr John Pritchard, and town MP Ian Lucas were also present at the launch.

There is a £50 first prize available for the winning garden, as well as various other prizes on offer.

Ms Mitchell said: “People look forward to this competition and it is nice to see people of young and older age coming together to launch the competition.

“Last year, Deva House won the service garden competition and it is very nice of them to invite us to launch this year’s event.

“I would like to thank Deva House and everyone who attended. Anyone from Caia Park can enter.”

Mr Lucas said: “The Caia Gardens competition is quite rightly an annual institution, it helps promote Caia and brightens up the estate each year.

“Helping out with the competition every year is a highlight of my summer, I always look forward to taking part.”

Cllr Pritchard added it gave him great pleasure to attend the launch and said he looked forward to judging the entries for the second year in a row.

Deputy estate office manager, Liza Ridge, will join Mr Lucas and Cllr Pritchard on the judging panel.

Hafod Y Wern teacher Ellen Sawyer said: “It has been a lovely opportunity for the school to participate in the garden competition and the launch.

“It has been great to let the children meet older members of the community and was a brilliant morning.”

Entry is free and application forms are available from the community council offices in Prince Charles Road, the estate office in Churchill Drive, or from environment group chair Dorothy Mitchell at 66 Gwenfro.

Applications must be returned by Friday, July 28.
