Wrexham were thwarted in their bid to go top of the Conference table as they were beaten 1-0 by Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.

It was Grimsby who came out on top in this second versus third encounter and the Mariners themselves took over at the summit from Newport County, who face Braintree Town on Saturday.

It was an open first half and although Grimsby enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, the best chance fell to returning Wrexham striker Danny Wright whose effort was cleared off the line by Sam Hatton.

Grimsby again made the better start to the second half but it was Wrexham who came closest to an opener, a well placed Johnny Hunt firing over from Wright's pass.

Wrexham pressed for an opener but it was Grimsby who broke the deadlock in the 77th minute, Aswad Thomas made inroads down the left and supplied a cross that was converted by Ross Hannah.

The Reds immediately pressed for an equaliser but it never arrived and the two game winning run came to an end.
