FRESH calls have been made to slash a village speed limit following a horror crash in which four people were taken to hospital.

The two-vehicle collision happened on the A539 near Overton recreation field at about 3.30pm on Tuesday – just yards from where nine-year-old Robbie Gaunt was knocked down by a car in March 2009.

Two men and two women – including an elderly male and female – were taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital with serious injuries.

Campaigners are calling for a 40mph buffer zone before the 30mph area in the centre of the village.

Overton councillor Lloyd Kenyon said: “We are investigating the imposition of a speed limit but there are rules and regulations dictated by the Welsh Government which we have to abide by.

“What has happened in this instance will encourage us to look at it again and that’s what we will do.”

Clwyd South MP Susan Elan Jones added: “It is very important that the speed limit is reduced as the residents wish.

“I have backed this from the beginning and there are big problems.”

Following Robbie’s death Overton Community Council launched a campaign to introduce a lower speed limit on the approach to the village along the main A539 route.

The council was backed by members of Robbie’s family, including Tara Green, partner of Robbie’s father Robert, who started a Justice for Robert petition calling for a change in the law to ensure courts are able to hand down sentences they believe would be more appropriate to such crimes.

David James Lunn, of Moorland Avenue, Queen’s Park, Wrexham, who was driving the car which hit Robbie, a pupil at St Christopher’s School in Wrexham, was jailed for 22 months and banned from driving for four years after he admitted perverting the course of justice. Lunn, 61, also admitted two charges of causing death while he had no licence and no insurance.

More than 2,000 people signed the petition.

A spokesman for Wrexham Council said: “The council is currently carrying out a speed limit review programme on all of the A and B roads in the county borough.

“The stretch of road in Overton is part of this programme. Once the review is complete our findings and recommendations will go out to public consultation so that members of each community will be able to have their say.”

Two people had to be cut from their vehicle by firefighters in the latest smash on Tuesday.
