AN OLD path which runs through two communities in Wrexham will be given a new lease of life thanks to a £20,000 cash boost.

The path, which runs through Whitegate and Smithfield, is said to have become run down in recent years.

But thanks to a successful bid to the Welsh Government’s cleaner, greener spaces fund by Caia Park Community Council the path will be improved and trees, wildflowers and shrubs will also be planted with benches and bins installed.

About £15,400 will come from the fund with £5,000 to be given by the community council itself.

Whitegate councillor Brian Cameron said: “The path starts from Derby Hill and goes past the play area in Whitegate, right into Kings Mill.

“It’s just worn out and it badly needs doing. Last year we had all the trees cut down as they were really overgrown.

“It could be a really nice walk into town. I went to the county council for help with the funding and thankfully we got it.

“It’s excellent news for the community. I know we’re going through hard times but we can put a smile on people’s faces.”

Smithfield councillor Keith Gregory said: “It used to be the old Ellesmere railway line, what we’re trying to do is encourage people to do more walking.

“It’s overgrown and it’s full of dirty big mud puddles if there’s a bit of rain.

“We’ve worked together on this, it’ll spruce it up. It’s a good stretch and we’ll hopefully get it lit up as well.”
