LOVERS of film can look forward to new venue in town showing an alternative to Hollywood blockbusters.

The Shrewsbury Film Society aim to offer an outlet for films that are not usually shown by mainstream cinemas.

From September 30 they will be showing current and classic films from around the world, and already have a programme of screenings running into December.

The scheme has been set up by friends Corinne Brown and Sally Scholes.

Corinne said: “We’ve been friends for over 10 years and we were both sitting around waiting patiently for someone to start up a film society. Of course, no one did, so we thought we should do it ourselves.

“We decided to put our words into action and approached the Hive who have been brilliant.

“They are a media and arts centre, so it’s perfect and they were very excited to host.

“It is a society so we’ll be encouraging people to join us as members and they will have an input in the future of the society and the types of film that we show.

“But if people want to just pop along and try it out to see what it’s all about then they can,” she added.

Starting with Gianni Di Gregario’s 2008 Italian comedy drama Mid-August Lunch on the opening night, other titles include American crime drama Frozen River, Chinese war film Red Sorghum, German documentary Our Daily Bread and the 1941 Orson Welles classic Citizen Kane.

The group plan to run 12 screenings between the end of September and April 2012.

For a £30 season ticket (£20 for students) members can come as many times as they want, or they can pay £5 (£3 for students) on the door for each individual screening.

Food and drink is welcome and there will be a bar from 7:30pm, with films showing at 8pm.
