HISTORIC bicycles will take pride of place at a vintage rally this weekend.

A selection of bicycles from The National Cycle Collection in the Automobile Palace in Llandrindod Wells will be showcased at the County of Salop Steam Engine Rally for the first time at Onslow Park, Shrewsbury, on Sunday (DEL AUG 28) and Monday. (DEL AUG 29)

Museum curator Freda Davies said: “The museum is pleased to be attending the rally for the first time and is very much looking forward to the event.

“The museum has over 250 bicycles of all ages and types with lots of associated memorabilia and guaranteed to bring back memories for lots of people.”

Also on display at the annual rally will be a host of steam engines plus beautifully preserved classic cars, motorcycles buses and lorries from yesteryear plus working horses on parade.

There will also be a photographic display created by society archivist Mike Llewellyn for visitors to peruse.

Joan Cook, section secretary for pedal cycles, engine judges and cup secretary, added: “Our oldest cycle dates from 1895, and we have three penny farthings among the many entries.

“Lots of exhibitors dressed in appropriate period costume to delight spectators in the arena.”

There will be more than 1,000 exhibits across the 45 acres of parkland plus fairground rides, a craft marquee, birds of prey and refreshments.

The two-day rally marks the 50th anniversary of the County of Salop Steam Engine Rally which began life in a small field in Church Stretton in August 1961 with 18 steam engines.

Tickets are £11 for adults, £110 for senior citizens and £1 for children.

Gates open at 9.30am on both days and car parking is free.
