POLICE are to crack down on speeding motorists around Shrewsbury with the introduction of new mobile camera spots.

A series of mobile speed enforcement sites along the A49 are being introduced in a bid to improve road safety.

Currently the only mobile camera spot on the route is at Dorrington, between Shrewsbury and Church Stretton.

Five more will be added along the road at Hadnall (30mph), Upper Battlefield (50mph), Leebotwood (40mph), and two more will be installed at Church Stretton (30 and 40mph).

The aim is to discourage speeding along the entire length of the A49 in Shropshire as drivers will not be sure which enforcement sites will be operational at any given time.

Speed camera warning signs will be located at regular intervals to inform all road users that speed enforcement is active along the route.

Katy Jenkins, communications manager at the Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia, said: “Motorists using excessive speed seriously compromise the safety of other road users.

“The strengthening of the enforcement activity will encourage motorists to adopt less risky and more considerate driving behaviours.”

Cllr Simon Jones, Shropshire Council's cabinet member with responsibility for road safety, welcomed the measures.

He said: “Enforcing speed limits is an important part of a wider approach to protecting the safety of all road users.

“We are committed to working with our partners to improve road safety.

“This new installation of speed control sites is one of a range of initiatives, alongside education, training, and improving roads, which are all helping to make the county's roads safer for all concerned.”
