A SERIES of fun activities to keep young people off the streets has been launched in Shrewsbury.

Events aimed at youngsters living around Armdale, Lowfield and Bridgeford Way will run throughout the school holidays.

The scheme kicked off with a trip to Alton Towers and a visit from the council's Reccy Rangers and Youth Bus at a barbecue on The Green in Bridgeford Way.

In the pipeline are swimming sessions, a trip to the Stiperstones, planting of community flower beds, a ‘splodge and splatter’ event, a visit by Bob the Playbus and a bingo and quiz night.

The scheme has been set up by police officers, social landlords Severnside Housing and Bromford Living and Shropshire Councillor Miles Kenny to tackle anti-social behaviour.

PC Jane Cowan said: “A lot of the complaints from people about anti-social behaviour in the area are centred around groups of young people hanging around on the streets, where they can appear intimidating or rowdy, often unintentionally.
“The vast majority of young people in the area are good kids and by offering them fun activities as an alternative to congregating outside people's homes, all areas of the community benefit.”
