A CYCLIST suffered serious head injuries after coming off his bike on a busy Shrewsbury street.

The man, who is in his 60s, remained in intensive care in hospital on Tuesday following the incident, which happened outside the bus depot in Ditherington Road shortly after 7pm on Monday.

Police believe the cyclist had been travelling towards the town centre and may have come off his bike after swerving to avoid a green Ford Fiesta car, which is understood to have been stationary in the road ahead.

No collision is believed to have occurred between the car and pedal cycle at this time.

PC Lee Barton, of Shropshire’s force operations support team, appealed for anyone who saw what happened to contact police on 0300 333 3000.

He said: “It was still daylight at the time and the area is likely to have been relatively busy.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident but has not yet spoken to police is asked to please get in touch.

“I am also keen to hear from anyone who might have witnessed the manner of cycling by the man, who was riding a pedal bike, or the driving of the green Ford immediately prior to the incident.

“The cyclist suffered serious head injuries and was initially taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital before being transferred to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.”

The road was closed until about 9.30pm while police collision investigators worked at the scene.
