TEXTILE artists have come together to show off their fabric-based work.

The exhibition ‘Material’ is currently running at the Bear Steps Gallery, St Alkmunds Place, Shrewsbury. On show is a diverse mix of work from illustrative print designs to textured and sculptural 3D pieces.

Shrewsbury-based artists Helen Foot and Sophie Copage co-curated the exhibition.

Helen, who trained in woven textiles at Winchester School of Art and then did an MA at the Royal College of Art, said: “I’ve been interested in textiles for quite a while. I knew there were very talented people in the area but feel they are hidden.

“Textiles are a funny thing – I don’t think people understand much about what they are and how they are made.”

Sophie trained in printed textiles at Ravensbourn.

The exhibition is open from 10am to 4pm daily and runs until Saturday. Other exhibitors include Lucinda Abell, a print designer from Cheshire; Sam Atkins’ woven sculptures; Steve Attwood-Wright, a weaver from Powys; Jo Bloodworth, a designer at Shrewsbury market hall; Sue Christian, an Oswestry-based weaver; Jacqui Dodds, a screen printer from Wellington; and Julie Hedges, who teaches and has written books on the technique of split-ply braiding.
