A THEATRE group is hoping a run of bad luck which plagued a play it first staged two years ago does not return.

The Attfield Theatre’s production of Bouncers was beset with problems in 2009.
Now the group is tempting fate by staging it again next month at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury.

Just two weeks before John Godber’s Bouncers was due to open at the Attfield Theatre in Oswestry in February 2009, one of the four cast members was forced to pull out.

A last-minute replacement was drafted in but then – only two days before curtain up – a second cast member fell and broke his leg.

Director Roger Williams was forced to step into the vacant role and the show not only went on but won critical acclaim from Attfield audiences.

Now Bouncers and its sister play Shakers, which the Attfield staged last year, are both heading to Theatre Severn for four nights.

“We are keeping our fingers crossed that there are no mishaps this time,” said Attfield chairman Roger, who is once again directing. “I’ve banned the cast from doing anything remotely risky!”

Written in 1987 by Godber and Jane Thornton at the height of the ‘Thatcherite revolution’, Shakers is a wickedly funny glimpse into that yuppie world through the eyes of a group of cocktail waitresses.

Bouncers, meanwhile, is an outrageous parody of the 1980s disco scene.
Set in and around a northern nightclub, four doormen and their customers provide a, saucy, laugh-out-loud slice of tacky nightlife.

The double bill of comedy is at Theatre Severn’s Walker Theatre from Wednesday, July 13 to Saturday, July 16. Tickets priced £10 are available now from the Theatre Severn box office on 01743 281281.
