THE granddaughter of famous Shrewsbury gardener Percy Thrower has landed a top role.

Mother-of-two Leanne Garvey, 33, from Four Crosses, has been chosen to join the general committee of the Shropshire Horticultural Society.

Leanne, daughter of Ann and Aubrey Kirkham, was appointed to serve on the floral and catering sub-committees where she will play an active role in these areas of the show.

Father Aubrey, former chairman of the Shropshire Horticultural Society, said: “Our family has been involved with the Shropshire Horticultural Society Committee for many years and Leanne’s appointment is a great tribute to the role Percy played in making the annual Shrewsbury Flower Show the success it is today.”

Mr Thrower was the horticultural adviser for the Flower Show for more than 40 years as well as a former chairman and award-winning exhibitor.

Leanne is also a qualified funeral director and works with her father at Aubrey Kirkham Funeral Directors Ltd.

She added: “Gardening is in my blood."

“I have very fond memories of my mother Ann, my two aunties and grandfather winning awards for their exhibits at the Shrewsbury Flower Show and my mother winning Best in Show with Percy Thrower’s Garden and Leisure.

“I’m very much looking forward to being actively involved in the society and of course the Shrewsbury Flower Show.”
