A HORRIFIC crash involving a coach full of students and a van has prompted a police investigation.

Four people – including the driver of the GHA coach, which was heading to Coleg Cambria’s Yale campus in Wrexham – were hospitalised as a result of the accident which happened on Halkyn Road, near Holywell shortly before 8am yesterday.

One man was airlifted to hospital in Stoke and three other people were taken to hospital via ambulance.

GHA general manager Stephen Bryce said the coach was travelling from Holywell to the Wrexham college site.

“The coach and Transit van crashed and the coach driver is in hospital,” he said. “None of the students was injured.”

An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, helped one man out of a van and spoke of his sense of shock over what had happened. “We were a couple of cars behind,” the witness said.

“The bus ended up in the hedge. I got out and I didn’t know how bad it was at first and then I saw a lad trying to climb out of the passenger window of the van.

“I went over to help him. There were two other people in there but they were trapped.”

The air ambulance was dispatched to the scene and airlifted one patient to Stoke.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said three people were ferried to hospital by land ambulance. One man with what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries was taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital and two others to Wrexham Maelor Hospital with minor injuries.”

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said about 20 students were on the coach, which has about 50 seats in total.

The spokesman said: “The passengers of the coach had evacuated prior to the fire service arriving and there was no need for us to do anything with the coach, but the driver was taken to hospital.

“The Transit van ended up on its side and the driver had to be extricated by the fire service using cutting gear.”

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact the roads policing unit on 101, quoting reference number U004774.
