A MAN has been charged with the murder of a woman near Mold at the weekend.

Darren John Jeffreys, a 47-year-old from Pwll Glas, Mold, was formally charged yesterday evening with the murder of 45-year-old Karen Catherall, of High Park, Gwernaffield.

He will appear at Wrexham Magistrates Court this morning.

Det Insp Mark Hughes, of North Wales Police, said last night: “Darren John Jeffreys of Pwll Glas, Mold, has been charged with murder and has been refused bail.”

At 4pm on Monday North Wales Police had been granted an additional 36 hours to question a suspect.

Officers also confirmed a house in Pwll Glas, Mold, had been cordoned off “in connection with a murder investigation in Gwernaffield”.

Mrs Catherall’s body was found at her home in High Park, Gwernaffield, in the early hours of Sunday.

Customers of the Queen’s Head in Mold said Mrs Catherall was in the pub with a man on Saturday.

At an inquest, opened on Monday, North Wales East and Central coroner John Gittins said the provisional cause of Mrs Catherall’s death – given after a post-mortem examination – was a blunt force head injury and “mechanical asphyxia”.

He adjourned the inquest to a later date.

Yesterday Mrs Catherall’s cousin, David Humphreys, of Bagillt, described the family’s heartache, saying: “We are all really in shock.

“She was such a lovely girl.”

More flowers and tributes were yesterday left outside the bungalow in High Park where Mrs Catherall was found yesterday, including a poignant message from her two sons.

A card with a bouquet read: “To mum, love you always. Your sons Zakk and Luke. Love Paul and Paige.”
