MEMORIAL plaques to commemorate those who died during the First World War have been presented.

Ceremonies were held in Holywell and Greenfield to hand over plaques to commemorate 100 years since the start of the Great War.

The Rev Aidan Coleman, vicar of Holywell, led prayers at the ceremonies, attended by the Mayor of Holywell, Cllr Ted Palmer, along with fellow councillors.

Cllr Palmer said: “As an ex-serviceman myself, I have always been loyal to the
forces, so it was an honour to be involved in this. We have to remember our past heroes – if it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t be here.

“The plaque is commemorating the war itself and particularly people from Holywell and Greenfield.”

Holywell councillor Peter Curtis said the plaques were something Holywell Town Council had hoped to have installed for some time.

He told the Leader: “It’s a very nice area and it’s a great location for people to go to and for anybody who wishes to go and visit the plaque.

“We have to remember these people – if it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t even be able to have a ceremony like this.”

The plaques were brought to the separate ceremonies at Holywell Memorial Gardens – on Panton Place – and Greenfield Memorial Gardens – on the corner of Coast Road and Dock Road.

But they will not be permanently put into place until a later date.

Cllr Curtis added: “It was a short service with a couple of prayers.

“I was very pleased to be part of it.

“Hopefully they can be in place for many years to come, so people can remember the sacrifice made.”
