A WREXHAM woman stabbed her brother with a kitchen knife following a drunken argument.

Vicky Cupit, 33, escaped immediate prison custody yesterday. She was given a 20-week suspended sentence at Mold Crown Court.

Miss Cupit admitted the offence at her home on Crescent Close in April 2013. She told the court she was acting in self-defence.

The court was told Richard Cupit, 28, turned up at the property at about 5pm in a “drunken state” after drinking at his girlfriend’s home.

Miss Cupit, along with her boyfriend Kevin Bagnal, had also been drinking “excessively”.

The three then continued drinking before an argument broke out. It turned violent after Miss Cupit and Mr Bagnal made ‘derogatory’ remarks about Mr Cupit’s girlfriend.

Richard Mark Davies, prosecuting, said there was some pushing and moments later  Mr Cupit saw a kitchen knife sticking out of his arm, and his top covered in blood.

He said Mr Bagnal, who had earlier been given an 18-month community order for his role in the attack, then stood up and punched him to the face a number of times.

Gordon Hennell, defending, said Miss Cupit had not touched alcohol since the incident.

He also said her health has deteriorated recently and she has to take a cocktail of drugs due to suffering with heart problems, diabetes and anxiety.

Judge Recorder Jeremy Walters said the stabbing had the potential to cause harm or even death.

“Mercifully, it was not as grave as it might have been,” he said.

“Those who use a knife in any form of confrontation should expect to receive a prison sentence.”

He added: “You are a person who has had significant health difficulties since this offence and you have to live with this and that has been a major change in your life. I expect you are genuinely remorseful.”

Miss Cupit was given a 20-week sentence, suspended for 12 months, and was made subject to a 12-month supervision order and was ordered not to go within 100 yards of Mr Cupit’ s address on Poplar Road, Wrexham.
