A 20-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for attacking his girlfriend, his mother and his grandfather in a drunken rage.

Adam Roberts, of Chester Road, Dobshill, accused girlfriend Rachel Beckett of “sleeping around” before throttling her and repeatedly kicking her while she lay curled up on the ground.

Roberts was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison by Flintshire Magistrates.

He pleaded guilty to assaulting Ms Beckett, as well as his mother Amanda Roberts and grandfather Kenneth Lindop.

He also admitted three criminal damage charges – smashing a door, damaging Mr Lindop’s Toyota and causing £120-worth of damage to a police car.

Roberts denied he pushed his mother to the ground, or that he kicked anyone during the attacks.

The court heard that Roberts, who had been given a 12-week suspended sentence just days before the latest incident, flew into a rage for no apparent reason while at the McDonald’s drive through in Broughton in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Mrs Roberts had driven Mr Lindop’s car to pick Roberts and Ms Beckett up from an engagement party at 2.15am before stopping at McDonald’s where the attack began.

The conflict also continued the following day when Roberts woke up, and he was then arrested at his home.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, said: “They stopped at McDonald’s drive through and he went into a rage for no apparent reason.

“He got out of the car and punched the windscreen and then went into McDonald’s and attacked three young men.

“His mother managed to get him out of the restaurant.”

Roberts then walked off and his mother and girlfriend drove away before receiving a call from Roberts asking them to return.

Mr Espie said once he got back in the car he became abusive towards Ms Beckett, accusing her of sleeping around.

The court heard Roberts took hold of her head and “dragged her down” and started “screaming in her face”.

He then pulled the car’s handbrake on when it was still in motion.

Once they got home Roberts continued the attack, punching Mr Lindop’s car a further three times, as well as the rear passenger door where Ms Beckett was sitting.

“He continued lunging at her and gripping her around the head and the throat making her lose her breath,” Mr Espie said.

Roberts’ then pulled her out of the car. She curled up on the ground and he began kicking her to the body, Mr Espie said, although Roberts denied it.

His mother tried to intervene and was pushed over. She hit her head causing a swelling, Mr Espie added.

Roberts then went to bed and woke up at about 10.15am.

The court heard he was apologetic to his mother, but was blaming his girlfriend, before he flew into another rage, attacking Mr Lindop, punching a window and throwing a metal chair.

Mr Espie told the court that when the police arrived Roberts started “punching, kicking, and butting” the police car.

Mark Davies, defending, said Roberts accepts he has a drink problem.

He added: “At some point or another he needs to get a grip of his alcohol problem.

He did express his remorse in the police station.”

Roberts was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison for breaching the terms of his suspended sentence, as well as 12 weeks for the offences, to run consecutively.
