A TWITTER 'freezergate' storm involving former Hanmer resident Diana Beard erupted after Wednesday night's Great British Bake Off show.
A dramatic incident in the episode’s final bake, where competitors were tasked with making a baked Alaska, saw fan favourite Iain Watters bin his creation after it was taken out of the freezer by another baker.
Confusion reigned over who was actually responsible for the incident but the majority of users seemed to place the blame squarely at the feet of Diana.
One outraged person even edited Diana's Wikipedia page to describe the baker as an “ice cream melting supervillain”.
Fans waved goodbye to Irishman Iain and his trademark beard as he was voted off by judges Paul Holywood and Mary Berry.
But it sparked a storm from online fans of the show, who thought Diana's apaprent removal of Iain's Alaska from the freezer meant his removal from the series was unfair.
Presenter Sue Perkins waded into the online debate to defend Diana, who now lives in Whitchurch, Shropshire.
She tweeted: “Iain's Alaska was out of the freezer for 40 secs. That's it. No sabotage. 40 secs of normal temp would NOT be enough to reduce it to liquid.”
And judge Paul Holywood tweeted: “At the end of the day Mary & I need something to judge, it's not about melted ice cream but about what's presented to US... #bingate
“I'm glad Mary's not on Twitter (as) this would upset her.. #enoughnow”
Twitter users were quick to blame Diana for the now infamous incident which kept viewers on the edge of their seat.
James Dawson tweeted: “Hands down best episode of #gbbo EVER. Basically SHAKESPEAREAN: the betrayal, the twist, the downfall.”
And Liza-Jane Gillespie ?could not get over the incident: “Almost 12 hours since #GBBO and I'm still angry over #freezergate - can't believe no one was penalised #sabotage”
Elena Etheridge ?compared it to last year’s “custardgate”, where contestant Deborah accidentally used Howard Middelton’s superior custard.
She tweeted: “THE MOST dramatic episode of #GBBO that I have ever seen much worse than the custard incident! #FreezerGate #Sabotage”
Some users focussed on Iain’s ability to remain calm.
Emma ?Cooper tweeted: “No idea how Iain stayed composed. I would have demolished Diana's swan.”
And Mike O'Flynn called for Diana to be disqualified: “?So angry about #freezergate on #GBBO I think there should be a disqualification for cheating!”
But Iain himself remained philosophical about what happened. He tweeted: “Guys no hard feelings now. Diana is a top lady and all us tent bakers are greats pals. Can't wait to tune into the rest of the series.”
