A CHEF who assaulted his partner twice and broke his bail conditions within six minutes has been jailed for eight weeks.

Paul Justin Conlan, 35, was sentenced at Flintshire Magistrates Court at Mold yesterday.

Prosecutor Justin Espie said Marie Edwards called police on July 9 at about 11pm and said she had been assaulted by her partner after a night out around Mold town centre.

A condition of his bail was he should not contact Ms Edwards directly or indirectly either himself or through anyone else.

“The main aggravating feature is the defendant breached his bail within six minutes of being charged,” said Mr Espie.

“That resulted in a further allegation of harassment.”

Mr Espie said at 4.01pm on July 10 Conlan used his mobile phone to ring the victim who also received several text messages from his brother.

The text messages pleaded with her to talk to Conlan to sort everything out.

One message read: “The police have told him to offer you the olive branch” which Mr Espie described as “misinformation”.

He added: “The defendant then breached bail again by sending a ‘What’s App’ message saying ‘I’m pressing charges’.”

The victim suffered a black eye, bruises to her ribs, a small cut above her eye and had hair pulled out.

She had not requested a restraining order however and decided to take him camping over the bank holiday weekend, driving him from his home in Chirk to the campsite in Aberystwyth.

On Saturday evening, a bickering argument developed between the couple and another camper, bearing a mallet, intervened.

Conlan was arrested following the incident, was refused bail and travelled up to Mold yesterday.

Chris Jesse, defending, said Conlan thought the trip would not breach his bail as Ms Edwards had initiated the contact.

“He’s a gifted chef with no previous convictions and has job interviews on Thursday and Friday this week,” he said.

“I find him a very naive 35-year-old who fails to comprehend what bail conditions really mean.”

Conlan, of Coronation Drive, Chirk, was sentenced for eight weeks for assault by battery on June 22, eight weeks for the assault on Ms Edwards on July 9 and eight weeks for harassment. The sentences are to run concurrently.
